SketchUp 2027: New Tools for Faster Modeling and Documentation

News | 06.11.2026

SketchUp 2027 is a major desktop release for anyone working with 3D modeling, architectural projects, and documentation. The focus is on less rework, faster iteration, and more productive drawing work in LayOut — modeling that keeps up with your ideas instead of getting in the way. Softprom is the official distributor of SketchUp.

Key updates include native non-destructive procedural modeling, significant documentation-performance gains in LayOut, improved interoperability with CAD/BIM formats and modernized SketchUp and LayOut clients for macOS.

Change the Model Without Rebuilding From Scratch

The headline feature of SketchUp 2027 is native non-destructive procedural modeling. Non-destructive procedural modeling is an approach in which the model keeps its inputs and the relationships between elements, so changing an input updates the geometry — no rebuild required. It is built into the tools you already use: there is no new tool or mental model to learn, and late changes become quick edits instead of a ground-up rebuild.

This matters most in projects where decisions keep changing during review with the client or the team.

What’s new:

  • Copy Along. A native path array for groups and components — “Follow Me, but for objects”. Repeat windows across a facade, fence balusters, deck boards, or any other recurring element along a path, and adjust the spacing after the fact.
  • Follow Me with multiple profiles. One path can now drive several sweep profiles within a single group or component — for example, a multi-layer wall (structure, insulation, finish) from one sweep.
  • Procedural Solid Tools. Booleans are now editable and non-destructive, and they preserve the target’s hierarchy and metadata — an IFC-classified wall stays classified after being cut.

As a result, architects and designers can explore alternatives faster and respond to changes without rebuilding a significant part of the model.

AutoFit Components: Less Manual Setup

In SketchUp 2027, Live Components auto-fit to whatever face you drag them onto — including faces with holes.

Instead of typing dimensions or adjusting sliders, the component uses the existing geometry as direct input and sizes itself automatically.

This removes a layer of routine work when placing and adjusting repeating elements in a model.

More Detailed Section Cuts With Section Hatch Patterns

New Section Hatch Patterns let you apply a real hatch pattern, not just a flat color, to the cut face SketchUp shows when a section plane slices through an object.

Concrete, brick, and batt insulation can each get their own graphic designation. A hatch can also be linked directly to a Material, so the Paint Bucket applies the texture and the section hatch in one click — a brick material cuts as a brick hatch automatically.

The result is more informative, material-accurate technical drawings without extra manual styling.

Faster Documentation in LayOut

A significant part of the SketchUp 2027 release addresses documentation performance and 2D drafting.

A refactored Hidden Line Rendering (HLR) engine drastically reduces the time it takes to generate vector linework for complex models and improves PDF and DWG export accuracy.

LayOut also adds:

  • Paperless / Infinite Canvas. Draft at full 1:1 scale with no page constraints, then auto-contain the work into a Scaled Drawing group — no need to commit to a page size or drawing scale up front.
  • Viewport Image Adjustments. Non-destructive opacity, brightness and contrast, hue and saturation controls directly on LayOut viewports and image assets — no more round-trips through an external image editor.

Modernized SketchUp and LayOut for Mac

SketchUp 2027 debuts rebuilt Mac clients for SketchUp and LayOut on the same Qt framework as Windows.

The goal is UI parity and improved stability on Mac, so the platform you use doesn’t change how SketchUp behaves. Working with multiple open models has also been improved: safer handling of docked models, better preview thumbnails and clearer window visibility make it easier to move from file to file.

Better Interoperability With CAD, BIM and 3D Formats

SketchUp 2027 also improves round-tripping with the file formats AEC teams already depend on.

The updates cover:

  • DWG and DXF. Import and export with new tessellation controls, annotation import options (text, dimensions, hatches), CAD metadata import, and a choice of 3D export mesh type.
  • IFC. Advanced workflows with expanded geometry support, CRS-aware geolocation export and flexible Tag/Layer import options.
  • TrimBIM and IFC. Feature parity — consistent Outliner structure, Tags and data fidelity across both formats.
  • USD, USDZ, USDA and USDC. Expanded USD support with new import and export options for orientation, mesh handling, fidelity and texture baking.

This makes SketchUp easier to use as part of a wider CAD/BIM workflow and to hand models between project stages.

What SketchUp 2027 Brings to Everyday Work

The main idea of the release is to shorten the gap between concept, change, and documentation — less time rebuilding, more time designing.

  • Faster exploration of design options. Copy Along, Follow Me with multiple profiles and Procedural Solid Tools let you test alternatives without rebuilding a significant part of the model.
  • Edits instead of rebuilds. Non-destructive procedural modeling and AutoFit Components keep the relationships between elements, so geometry updates when inputs change.
  • More efficient drawing work. Hidden Line Rendering, Paperless / Infinite Canvas, Viewport Image Adjustments and Section Hatch Patterns speed up 2D documentation in LayOut.
  • Data exchange with other CAD and BIM tools. DWG, DXF, IFC, TrimBIM and USD formats with granular control over what comes in and what goes out.

For architects, designers, and other teams that regularly receive late changes from clients or work with several versions of the same project, this means less rework and more time for design itself.
