Segura on Password Security and Resilience in the Age of AI 2026
News | 20.10.2026
Imagine your password is stolen tonight. You did not reuse it, you did not pick a weak one, yet a convincing AI-crafted message tricked you into clicking. The real question is no longer whether a credential will be compromised, but how much damage one stolen password can do inside your organization. Segura addresses this challenge for Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 with a clear message: do not make it easy for attackers.
What was announced
For October 2026, aligned with Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the US and European Cybersecurity Month in the EU, Segura has published practical guidance built around the campaign theme Don't make it easy for them. The guidance combines CISA's four individual steps with the 3Rs framework for organizations: Reduce, Replace, Recover.
Segura highlights how AI has compressed attacker reconnaissance from a week to minutes, how deepfake voice and video now bypass traditional phishing cues, and how AI agents are becoming a new category of identity that must be governed with scoped permissions, rotation and revocation.
Why this matters
For CIOs, CISOs and procurement leaders, the shift is strategic. Attackers do not break in — they log in. Once a valid credential is used, the application sees a legitimate session. If that identity is privileged, one credential may unlock the business.
Password security is not really about passwords. It is about what the password unlocks
Autonomous AI agents expand the identity attack surface. Every agent that can query databases, call APIs, deploy code or change cloud infrastructure holds authority — and that authority must be mapped, scoped and monitored like any human administrator.
Technical details
- Reduce: discover privileged accounts and secrets wherever they live, remove unused ones and eliminate standing privilege with just-in-time access and Zero Standing Privilege.
- Replace: swap shared privileged accounts for individual accountable identities, move passwords out of spreadsheets and scripts into a vault with automatic rotation, replace permanent admin rights with JIT access.
- Recover: monitor authentication and privileged sessions, isolate and test backups, maintain protected break-glass procedures and practice mass credential rotation.
- MFA: prefer phishing-resistant methods such as passkeys and hardware security keys over SMS codes and push prompts.
- AI agent identity: every agent needs its own identity, an accountable owner, explicitly scoped permissions and credentials that can be revoked immediately; short-lived agents receive ephemeral just-in-time identities.
- Authorization vs. authentication: an agent that reads a database should not be able to delete it — authority must match the task.
