How Akamai powers AI infrastructure with renewables: EDP VPPA in Singapore
News | 26.10.2026
Akamai signs its first Asia-Pacific renewable energy agreement to match growing AI and cloud infrastructure demand with clean electricity.
AI workloads are driving rapid growth in cloud and edge compute capacity, and with that growth comes a direct increase in electricity consumption. For CIOs, CISOs and sustainability leaders, the challenge is to scale digital infrastructure while meeting net-zero commitments and local energy regulations. Akamai is addressing this by pairing new capacity with locally generated renewable electricity. Softprom is the official distributor of Akamai.
What was announced
Akamai and EDP APAC, the Asia-Pacific arm of global renewable energy company EDP, announced the signing of a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) in Singapore. Under the agreement, Akamai will offtake electricity generated by a portfolio of rooftop solar systems installed across 27 locations in Singapore.
The combined systems can generate up to 17,000 MWh of clean electricity annually, equivalent to a 13 MWp system, and are expected to deliver about 5,850 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in emissions abatement each year. 3Degrees provided advisory support to Akamai in structuring and executing the agreement. All 27 sites are already operational.
AI is accelerating demand for computing capacity, but the conversation cannot be only about adding more infrastructure. We also need to think about the energy required to support that growth
Why this matters
For technology buyers, renewable energy sourcing is now part of vendor due diligence. ESG reporting under frameworks such as CSRD, local energy mandates and customer sustainability requirements make the energy profile of cloud providers a procurement criterion, not just a corporate value.
The Singapore agreement shows that even in a land-constrained, highly urbanized market, rooftop solar portfolios can deliver meaningful corporate PPA volumes. It also aligns Akamai with Singapore Green Plan 2030 and its goal to reach 100% renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2030.

FAQ
What is a virtual power purchase agreement?
A VPPA is a long-term financial contract to purchase renewable electricity and its environmental attributes without physical delivery. The buyer settles the difference between a fixed strike price and the market price, supporting new renewable generation.
How does the Akamai VPPA with EDP contribute to net-zero targets?
The 27-site rooftop solar portfolio provides up to 17,000 MWh of clean electricity per year and roughly 5,850 tCO2e of annual abatement, supporting Akamai's goal of 100% renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2030.
Why Singapore as the first Asia-Pacific location?
Singapore is a dense data center hub with limited land, so rooftop solar aggregation under the Green Plan 2030 is a practical way to scale renewables and support corporate PPA demand.
